What We Do

An essay writing guide for college students:

plan, draft and revise
If you are a college student, you are probably writing essays every week or so. Your teacher is very careful with these assignments and you want to maintain your grades high, so try not to disappoint him. However , sometimes you feel you could do better so you decided to improve your writing skills. Well, first I have to tell you “Congratulations!” and second, here’s an easy writing guide that you can follow every time you write a composition!

About

Find your topic! It is not enough to write about something easy; you have to make sure that it is something that your colleagues will really love. You can take a few days for this step alone, because in the end it will be worth it! Make sure that you write about something that you love, something that makes you feel interested, something that will make a difference in your day. How about a humanitarian cause that you support, or a project that you are planning to start in the next years?

Do some research!

As much as you are passionate about the topic, you still have to do some research to impress your colleagues. Make sure that you only take information from verified sources and you don’t count on websites that are not trustworthy. When you have doubts about a certain information, it’s best to check with your teacher or simply ignore it completely.

Make an outline!

This will make everything much, much easier.

When you write following an outline you can be sure that you expose your ideas in the right order and you won’t leave anything important on the outside. Plus, if your composition is really long it would be very useful to divide the text into chapters. A chapter shouldn’t have less than one or two pages, and not more than ten.

Write the first draft.

have all the information that you need

At this point, you have all the information that you need, so you should start writing. Do not worry about mistakes or ideas that you are unsure about. You have time to get rid of them later. Write anything that comes in your mind.

Edit.

And by editing, I don’t mean that you should only correct the grammar mistakes.

You should polish your ideas, divide them into paragraphs, add new information and remove the sentences that don’t sound well. When you are done with this, you have to take a look at the details. Is the font suitable for an academic composition? Are the edges alright? Did you arrange the spacing? All these things will make a difference in the end!

Present your composition the right way.

If you are required to present your composition in front of the class, do this in a funny, but smart way.

You can make some slides, you can bring pictures and videos that are related to the topic and you can even write a small song about the topic. This will make your presentation really interesting for your colleagues and you will prove that you are ready to put in a lot of work for your assignments.

Ask for feedback.

  • 1.

After the first draft is ready, you have to ask for feedback from someone you admire. They will tell you what are the good things in your composition, what ideas you should remove and what more you should add. If you don’t want to show the draft to your teacher, you can ask one of your colleagues to take a look.
